On 25 October 2019, in the frames of the 18-th International Workshop on Intuitionstic Fuzzy Sets and Generalized Nets, organized in Warsaw, Poland, Corresponding Member Prof. Krassimir Atanassov from the Institute of Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering – BAS was awarded the Commemorative Medal for the 40-th Anniversary of the Systems Research Institute at the Polish Academy of Sciences. The medal was awarded to Prof. Atanassov by the Director of SRI-PAS Prof. Slawomir Zadrozny, and Prof. Janusz Kacprzyk, Academician of the PAS and Foreign Member of BAS, in the presence of about 4 researchers from the field of fuzzy sets and soft computing from Poland, Bulgaria, Belgium, Gret Britain, Mexico and Slovakia.
The IWIFSGN’2019 conference is being annually held since 2001 in the frames of the bilateral interacademic project between the research team of Prof. Atanassov from IBPhBME-BAS and Prof. Kacprzyk from SRI-PAS, where the scientific research on the two mathematical formalisms, originally proposed by Prof. Atanassov – the intuitionistic fuzzy sets (IFS and the generalized nets (GN).
It is worth noting that Systems Research Institute of PAS is one of the leading research centres outside of Bulgaria, where the theory of IFSs, defined in 1983 by Atanassov, have been actively developed and applied in practice, and where 4 PhD dissertations devoted to IFSs have been defended in the last years. Thus, the award for Prof. Atanassov represents a recognition for one of the original Bulgarian contributions to the contemporary European and world science.
